Overview

Gynecomastia is a common condition that causes enlargement of male breast tissue. It can affect one or both sides of the chest and may occur during puberty, adulthood or later in life due to hormonal changes, weight gain, genetics or certain medications.

Although gynecomastia is not usually a serious medical condition, it can have a significant impact on confidence and quality of life. Many men feel uncomfortable removing their shirt, wearing fitted clothing or taking part in sports and social activities. Gynecomastia surgery is designed to remove excess glandular tissue, fat and, where necessary, excess skin to create a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest contour.

Why Choose Gynecomastia Surgery?

Every patient has different reasons for seeking treatment. Common benefits include:

  • Reduce enlarged male breast tissue.
  • Create a flatter, firmer chest.
  • Improve body confidence.
  • Enhance chest definition.
  • Feel more comfortable in fitted clothing.
  • Improve confidence during sports and swimming.
  • Achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Gynecomastia surgery may be suitable for men whose enlarged breasts have not improved with weight loss or lifestyle changes. Candidates should be in good general health, maintain a stable weight and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of surgery.

During your consultation, Kevin McGarry will assess your chest, discuss your medical history and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on your anatomy and personal goals.

Personalised Treatment

Every chest is different. Some patients require liposuction alone, while others benefit from removal of glandular tissue or skin tightening. Your treatment is tailored specifically to achieve the most natural-looking result.

  • Review your medical history.

  • Create a personalised treatment plan.

Surgical Technique

Liposuction

If the enlargement is mainly caused by excess fatty tissue, liposuction can remove unwanted fat through very small incisions, helping create a smoother chest contour with minimal scarring.

Gland Excision

When firm glandular breast tissue is present, surgical excision may be required. The incision is usually placed discreetly around the edge of the areola, allowing the enlarged gland to be removed while minimising visible scars.

Combined Technique

Many patients achieve the best results with a combination of liposuction and gland excision. This approach creates a flatter, more masculine chest while maintaining natural contours.

The Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is normally performed under general anaesthetic as a day-case procedure and usually takes between one and two hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

The operation generally involves:

  • Administration of general anaesthesia.
  • Small, carefully planned incisions.
  • Removal of excess fat using liposuction.
  • Removal of enlarged glandular tissue where required.
  • Reshaping the chest for a natural contour.
  • Closure using fine dissolvable sutures.
  • Application of compression garments.
